This Outrage Shall Not Be Born

Hollywood, Star Trek No Comments »

There will be a new Star Trek movie next year, highlighting the adventures of the original series crew. Chris Pine is set to be the new Kirk, and Leonard Nimoy is slotted to play (the older) Spock - but apparently there was no room at the inn for William Shatner.

Nothing is yet written in stone. There is still time to reverse this terrible error.

My wife, who is a genius, hypothesizes that Shatner wanted too much money. I could see that happening; his career is doing really well, he has become a genuine cultural icon, and his importance to the Trek franchise, while possible of overstatement, is enormous. He may have thought he was being low-balled.

Or maybe the creators of the film are just being Hollywood idiots. That wouldn’t be a novel explanation, but it has a certain historical plausibility. Whatever the scenario, I hope this is fixed. A re-imagining of the old series has the potential to be fantastic - and it wouldn’t be the same without the original, accept-no-imitation, 100% James Tiberius Kirk.

Oh, and yeah, this is my first post here at the new digs, but never mind that. Take to the streets and demand this outrage be corrected!
