Seminars
I vary the seminars that I offer at given times, and develop new seminar curricula on an ongoing basis. Currently I have two seminars available.
“I Killed Microsoft Bob And You Can Too: Knowing When To Cut Your Losses”
This four-hour seminar focuses on identifying the elements of your operation which are not making and are not likely to make a positive contribution to your organization’s success. One of the hardest things for business people to do is to let go of failure – we all know that many projects and ideas simply won’t work out, but we are reluctant to cut the cord. My seminar helps knowledge workers to identify problem areas, recognize the differences between fixable and unfixable problems, and obtain buy-in throughout the organization’s decision chain when it comes time to pull the plug. I also explain and explore psychological techniques useful in removing personal fear from analytics by legitimately distancing the failure from the person. Highly recommended for software professionals who will enjoy hearing the inside story of the demise of Microsoft Bob (which I was one of the key figures responsible for), as well as for managers who must balance multiple projects and priorities.
“I Killed Microsoft Bob” is a four-hour seminar suitable for any small or medium-sized group of up to 20 people. The seminar charge is a base $750 for a seminar held on your facility with up to 20 participants. Larger groups should be split into multiple sessions.
“Build Your Own Future: Developing Original Websites As A Revenue Model”
This four-hour seminar is an introduction to developing content web sites, particularly on a social / community model, for fun and profit. I talk about the nature of social media sites, discuss how to foster community and reader ownership of a site, and address some issues of search engine placement and organic search traffic – and I also talk about how it’s much more important to build a reader-optimized site than it is to build a Google-optimized site. Seminar participants learn how site traffic can be monetized, the tradeoffs and choices that have to be made in that arena, and the importance of having a financial model for the site before there are any finances to speak of. I draw on my experience developing BNN into one of the most popular citizen journalism sites on the web, and share how to focus the energy and involvement of a dedicated community on making a website a creative and economic success.
“Build Your Own Future” is a four-hour seminar suitable for any sized group. It is an exceptionally good fit for teams working on website development, as well as for individuals seeking information on how to build their own personal web empire. The seminar charge is a base $750 for a group seminar held at your facility; individual attendance events are scheduled in advance and the charge is $49 per person.
Seminars can be scheduled anywhere within the Denver or Colorado Springs metropolitan areas at no additional charge. For seminars scheduled outside the local area I do charge travel, lodging, and hospitality expenses.
To schedule a seminar for your workgroup or organization, or to find out the location and date of the next individual attendance event, send me an e-mail or give me a call at 719-302-2237.
